The name for this aluminium-rich silicate mineral derives from the Greek word kuanos or kyanos meaning deep blue. German mineralogist Abraham Gottlob Werner (1749-1817), who published one of the first manuals for the identification of minerals, adopted the name as the crystals of this mineral display a characteristic sky-blue to deep blue colour. Previously the mineral was known as blue talc, as it is relatively soft, or lamellar beryl due the appearance of the elongated crystals. French naturalist and mineralogist Horace-Bénédict de Saussure  (1740-1799) classified it even as sapphire.
